What are dermal fillers?
Filler is a gel placed under the skin to restore volume. Most are hyaluronic acid, a substance the body already makes and can dissolve again if needed.

How the treatment works
Filler is placed at a specific depth in a specific compartment, using either a needle or a blunt cannula depending on the area.

Two different kinds of filler
- Juvederm and Restylane
- Hyaluronic acid. Works immediately, lasts months to a couple of years, and can be dissolved. The right choice for lips, under eyes and definition.
- Sculptra and Radiesse
- Biostimulators. Rather than filling a space they prompt your own collagen over a series of sessions, so the change builds over months rather than appearing the same day. Radiesse holds around twelve to eighteen months, Sculptra can run to two years or more. Better for overall volume than for one feature, and neither can be dissolved.

- Will I look overfilled?
- Overfilling is a technique problem, not a product problem. Starting conservatively and reviewing is always an option.
- Can it be undone?
- Hyaluronic fillers, which is most of them, can be dissolved. Sculptra and Radiesse cannot.
- How long does it last?
- It depends on the product and the area. Restylane is usually six to twelve months. Juvederm ranges from six to eighteen months, and the thicker versions used in cheeks can hold eighteen to twenty four. Radiesse is around twelve to eighteen months. Sculptra builds gradually and can last two years or more. Lips move the most, so they usually need topping up at nine to twelve months. Individual results vary.
- Does it hurt?
- Most fillers contain anaesthetic and numbing cream is usually used first.
- Will I bruise?
- Sometimes, particularly around the lips and under the eyes. It settles within a week.
- What if something is not right?
- Hyaluronic filler can be dissolved, so almost nothing here is permanent.
