Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in New York
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has you breathe oxygen in a pressurised chamber, which dissolves far more oxygen into your blood than breathing normally can. For a specific set of medical conditions it is a well established treatment.
What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
You sit or lie in a sealed chamber at higher than normal air pressure and breathe oxygen. The pressure allows much more oxygen to dissolve into the blood and reach tissue that is not getting enough of it.
It is normally a course of sessions rather than a one off, and each session takes a couple of hours.
It is real medicine for a defined list of conditions. The FDA has cleared hyperbaric chambers for thirteen specific indications, and this practice treats within that list.
How the treatment works
You are assessed for suitability, then treated in the chamber under supervision. Your ears need to equalise as the pressure changes, in the same way they do on a plane.

What it is cleared to treat
- Non healing wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers
- Radiation injury to bone or soft tissue

- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Decompression sickness, and air or gas embolism
- Gas gangrene
- Severe anaemia
- Sudden hearing loss and sudden vision loss

What it is not cleared for
- Anti ageing and general wellness
- The FDA has specifically warned about hyperbaric chambers being marketed this way. It is not a cleared use and it is not offered here on that basis.
- Cancer, Lyme disease, autism, Alzheimer disease
- The FDA names these as uses that have not been cleared or approved. This practice does not treat them with hyperbaric oxygen.

- It depends entirely on the condition. Courses commonly run to twenty or more sessions.
- Does insurance cover it?
- For the cleared indications it often does.
- Are there risks?
